Scherzo

For Clarinet Quartet

Program Notes

Scherzo is an energetic and playful piece that explores unique chord movement and colorful harmonies. Scherzo was one of my earliest pieces, so I used it as a medium to experiment and expand my harmonic palette. The piece makes use of modes such as the lydian mode to create alluring soundscapes, but also uses modes like the whole-tone scale to create barrages of dissonance.

The piece was originally written for four of my high school friends who were very talented clarinetists, so I strove to write a piece that featured every musician in the ensemble. Each individual part is important to the performance of this piece, as there are multiple sections where a composite rhythm is broken up between multiple parts in the ensemble and each player is also featured as a soloist or in a soli.
